Meet the founder: King St

In the June-August 2026 issue of NZ Marketing magazine, we asked agency founders to tell us the story behind why they started their agency, their favourite thing, what they’ve learned and their best advice.

King St

Tell us the story behind founding your agency.

After a 13 year stint in some of the big agencies – DDB, Colenso and Saatchis along with a couple of shorter stints at the Campaign Palace and Bates, I knew my time was up when Bates and the Palace merged.

When it all fell apart, I looked at heading overseas or another agency but then the opportunity came up to buy Rimmington Advertising. It was owned by Russ Rimmington, my second cousin, whose accountant was my Dad!

Rimmington was the Mayor of Hamilton so the timing was perfect for both of us. He had a great business with mainly agricultural clients so it was an excellent foundation.

So on July 1, 1999, the clients and accreditations were transferred to the new company and King St was born. 27 years later it remains the best decision I ever made. Long live King St!

Chris Williams set up King St in 1999.

What’s your favourite thing about running your own agency?

Being in control, not being controlled.

I answer to my team and our clients, not to some faceless network exec. Every decision is made in what’s best for the long-term interests of King St.

Also, I love working with people of all ages and backgrounds. Will never stop learning about and loving the business.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned?

Respect is earned.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received or given out?

Two ears, one mouth. Use in proportion.

Anything else we should know?

In late 2024, I was struck by pancreatitis that resulted in multiple complications including sepsis, pneumonia and organ collapse. This resulted in me spending 10 weeks in ICU on life support, four and a half months in hospital in total.

It was a miracle I survived. Since then, I’ve been asked to speak about my experience and I always reinforce what the doctors told me: it was my mindset that made a difference.

After a long recovery, I’ve now made some changes – appointed a CE, COO and CCO, giving myself a new role that includes coaching, mentoring, networking, growth and making sure everyone is busy and happy.

I’m very grateful to be here. The best days are ahead!
