Set-price package boxes clever
NZ Post used Census stats and store-level data to win back high-value senders with a simple offer.
International sending – one of NZ Post’s highest value categories – had been in decline since 2020, especially during the crucial Christmas period.
Research identified a fundamental behavioural shift: rather than sending gifts from New Zealand, Kiwis were increasingly buying from retailers in the destination country and shipping gifts domestically.
Cost perception was the primary barrier – 64% of customers thought it was too expensive.
Packaging uncertainty, forms, weight limits and unclear pricing just added to the complexity.
NZ Post’s box offer to Australia, introduced over Christmas in 2024, demonstrated demand for a simplified international offer.
However, NZ Post services a wide range of overseas destinations, raising questions around where offers should cover, how they should vary by destination and how to reach customers whose demand was geographically dispersed.
Further analysis showed international sending demand varied sharply by geography and destination.
Meanwhile, behavioural data revealed a consistent pattern, with specific parcel sizes repeatedly sent to various destinations. This created an opportunity to package real customer behaviour into simplified, destination-specific pricing offers.
Precision behind the simplicity
NZ Post’s analysis combined parcel weight distributions, destination level volume, revenue and margin to answer three critical questions:
- Which destinations to include?
- What weight caps would work at scale?
- What fixed prices balanced uptake and return?
Its ‘Send a little joy to the world’ campaign introduced set-price Christmas boxes. Customers could fill a box to send overseas, for example:
- $20 for up to 1kg to Australia and the South Pacific
- $40 for up to 1kg to Canada, USA and the UK.

Data also informed the tactical mix for the campaign, which was optimised for behaviour change rather than broad reach.
NZ Post combined Stats NZ Census data with its own store-level international sending data to create a national map of sending potential, ranking each location based on a bespoke scoring system that showed exactly where its highest-value audiences lived and where they were most likely to send to.
The result was a campaign that appeared simple to customers but was underpinned by sophisticated, multi-layered decisioning and protected against decline over NZ Post’s crucial sending period.
